The Stones

The Mill at Fulbourn was built in 1808 with two pairs of stones controlled by the sails (east stone below left), if the sails did not turn no grinding could take place. A third pair of stones was added later in the century connected to the spur wheel similar to the other stones, but also with undergearing, (photo bottom right).

The gearing was controlled by a pulley wheel on the outside of the Mill; turning via a belt from a standing engine. The Mill could now be used when there is no wind, Also when the sails were out of action as in the last few years of the Mills working life.
